What we repair

The laptop faults we see every week

Most laptop problems fall into a handful of categories. If yours isn't listed, call anyway: chances are we've had one on the bench.

Screen replacement

Cracked, flickering, lined or black displays, failed backlights, and damaged lids and hinges that are starting to pull the screen apart.

Battery replacement

Batteries that won't hold a charge, aren't detected, or have started to swell. A swollen battery should be looked at promptly, so stop using the laptop and call us.

Won't charge or turn on

Worn DC jacks, damaged USB-C ports and failed charging circuits. One of the most common laptop killers, and usually fixable.

Liquid damage

Spills properly cleaned and treated for corrosion, with failed components replaced on the board. Not just dried out and hoped for.

Keyboards & trackpads

Sticky, dead or missing keys, keyboards damaged by spills, and trackpads that have stopped clicking or responding.

Overheating & fan noise

Fans clogged with dust, dried out thermal paste and failing fans. A proper clean and repaste often fixes the slowdowns and shutdowns too.

Slow laptops & upgrades

SSD and memory upgrades, clean Windows and macOS reinstalls, and malware removal. Often the difference between replacing a laptop and keeping it.

Board-level repair

No power, no display, or shorts after a surge or spill. We diagnose to the failed component and repair the logic board itself.

Files off a dead laptop

If the laptop is beyond saving, the data usually isn't. We move your files to a new machine, or recover them from a failed drive.

How it works

From a broken laptop to a working one

1

Call or text

Tell us the make and model and what it's doing. We can often narrow the fault down on the phone.

2

Drop it off

Bring the laptop and its charger to WOTSO reception at 162 Macquarie Street. Call ahead so reception is expecting you.

3

Proper diagnosis

We test it on the bench to find the actual fault, so you're quoted for the repair it needs and nothing else.

4

A firm quote first

We call you with the quote. Nothing goes ahead until you've approved it, and we let you know when it's ready to collect.

Why there's no price list on this page. Two laptops with the same symptom can need very different repairs: a laptop that won't charge might need a new charger, a new port, or a component replaced on the board. A published price would be wrong more often than right, so we quote every job once we know what's actually wrong.

Specialist work

When it's more than a part swap

Plenty of shops can fit a new screen or battery. Fewer can repair the board when that's where the fault is. That's often the difference between a repair and a new laptop.

Micro-soldering Component-level rework on logic boards: failed power ICs, shorted capacitors, damaged connectors and charging circuits, replaced individually rather than swapping the whole board.
Liquid damage Boards stripped down, cleaned of residue and treated for corrosion, then tested rail by rail so hidden damage is found before it fails again.
Power fault diagnosis Dead laptops traced to the failed component, so a no-power fault gets fixed at its cause instead of guessed at with parts.
Data recovery If the laptop's drive has failed too, the data can often still be recovered in-house. More on data recovery →

Not sure what's wrong with it?

Tell us what the laptop is doing, or text a photo of the screen or the damage, and we'll give you an honest read on it before you bring it in.

What laptop customers say

★★★★★

Nelson repaired both my 7 year old Dell and my mum's laptop, I could not be happier with the result. He diagnosed both machines carefully and explained the issues in plain language, no jargon or upselling. Two older laptops now run like new.

Knowledgeable and able to identify a sub board as the problem, saving me from replacing the whole laptop. Communicates well. Friendly, polite, not patronizing. Give them a go if you need a repair.

I spoke with Nelson this morning regarding my very 'unhappy' MacBook and he was extremely helpful and friendly. He offered excellent advice and options. Highly recommend dealing with Nelson.

Laptop repair questions

What people ask before they call

Do you repair MacBooks?

Yes. MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, both Intel and Apple silicon models. Screens, batteries, keyboards, charging faults, liquid damage and logic board repairs.

How much does laptop repair cost?

It depends on the fault and the parts it needs, which is why we diagnose before quoting. Call and describe what the laptop is doing and we can usually give you a good idea on the phone. You always get a firm quote before any work begins.

How long will my laptop repair take?

Every job is different. It depends on what diagnosis finds and whether parts need to be ordered for your model. We talk timing through with you when we quote, so you know where you stand before you approve anything.

I spilled liquid on my laptop. What should I do?

Turn it off and unplug it straight away, and don't power it back on to check if it still works. Putting it in rice doesn't help. Corrosion keeps working on the board while the laptop sits, so the sooner we can clean and treat it, the better the odds.

My laptop won't charge. Is it the charger or the laptop?

It could be either. Worn chargers and cables, damaged DC jacks or USB-C ports, and failed charging circuits on the board all look the same from the outside. We test each one, so you only pay for the part that has actually failed.

Is my old laptop worth repairing?

Often, yes. A new SSD, a fresh battery and a proper clean can give an older laptop years more use. If a repair doesn't make financial sense, we'll tell you and talk through the alternatives rather than take the job anyway.

Will I lose my files?

Most repairs don't touch your data, but we always recommend a backup if you can make one. If the laptop won't boot at all, we can usually still get your files off it and move them to a new machine.

Do you pick up laptops?

No, we work on a drop-off basis. Bring the laptop and its charger to WOTSO reception, ground floor, 162 Macquarie Street, Hobart. Please call first so reception is expecting you.
