Nelson repaired both my 7 year old Dell and my mum's laptop, I could not be happier with the result. He diagnosed both machines carefully and explained the issues in plain language, no jargon or upselling. Two older laptops now run like new.

What we fix

Everyday repairs, done properly

Most jobs through the door are the ordinary kind, and they're the ones worth getting right. If it's a computer and it's broken, start here.

Screens & batteries

Cracked, flickering or dead displays, and batteries that no longer hold a charge. Laptops, Macs and tablets.

Won't turn on or charge

Dead machines, failed charge ports and DC jacks, power faults: one of the most common laptop killers, and usually fixable.

Slow computers

Machines that take five minutes to boot, freeze constantly, or have quietly filled up with junk. Often a cheap fix.

Viruses & pop-ups

Malware removal, scam pop-ups, browser hijacks and clean re-installs, with your files kept intact wherever possible.

Upgrades & new setups

SSD and memory upgrades that make an old machine feel new, plus new laptop setup and moving everything across from the old one.

Data recovery

Clicking, dropped or unreadable drives. Recovered here at component level, including the cases other shops send to the mainland.

Also on the bench

MacsiMac and MacBook repairs, upgrades and setup.
Gaming PCsCustom builds, overheating, crashes and performance upgrades.
ConsolesPlayStation and Xbox faults, including drive and overheating problems.
Phones & tabletsScreens, batteries and charge ports for iPhone, Android and iPad.
TVsPanel, power and board faults on modern televisions.
Business ITOngoing support, new setups and network headaches for small business.
Liquid damageSpills assessed and properly cleaned, not just dried out and hoped for.
Board-level repairComponent-level soldering when a part on the board itself has failed.

How it works

Straightforward from the first call

Four steps, no runaround. Most people are surprised how much we can work out over the phone before the machine has even left the house.

1

Call or text

Describe what it is doing, or send a photo. Most of the time we can give you a realistic idea on the spot.

2

We look at it properly

Drop the machine in to us in the Hobart CBD. It then gets properly tested on our bench rather than guessed at over a counter.

3

You get a real price

We tell you what is actually wrong, what it costs, and how long your particular job will take. If it is not worth repairing, we will say so.

4

You decide

Nothing goes ahead until you have approved it. You are never billed for work you did not agree to.

And after you get it back: if something does not seem right, or you simply want to ask a question about the machine, call us. There is no support window that runs out.

Specialist work

The repairs other shops send away

Most repair businesses can replace a part. Fewer can repair the part itself. This is the equipment and training behind our harder jobs, and the reason a dead drive does not have to mean lost photos.

PC-3000 Hardware-level imaging and firmware repair for drives that won't mount: the same class of equipment used by dedicated data recovery labs, here in Hobart.
Donor head swaps Matched donor drives kept in-house and transplanted for mechanical failures: the clicking, grinding and spin-up faults software can't touch.
Micro-soldering Component-level rework on logic boards, for liquid damage, power surges and failed charging circuits. The alternative is usually being told to buy a new machine.
NAND chip-off Reading flash memory directly when an SSD's own controller has failed, for solid state drives and devices with soldered-down storage.

Not sure what's wrong with it?

That's normal, and it's the easiest thing to sort out on the phone. Describe what the machine is doing and we'll tell you where you stand.

Security & privacy

Confidentiality is part of the job, not an afterthought

We regularly work on machines belonging to businesses, professionals and people whose records are genuinely sensitive. Every device that comes in is handled to that standard, whether it belongs to a law firm or a household.

NDAs available on request. We are happy to sign a non-disclosure agreement before work begins. Standard for business, legal, medical and financial clients, and available to anyone who wants one.

Secure storage. Devices are held in a private, controlled workshop rather than stacked behind a public shop counter.

Controlled data handling. Access is limited to what the repair or recovery actually requires, and recovered data is returned to you and cleared from our systems afterwards.

Nothing leaves our lab. Data recovery is carried out in-house in Tasmania. Your drive is not shipped off to a third party interstate or overseas.

Where we work

Computer repairs across greater Hobart

Most machines come in from the CBD and Sandy Bay, the northern suburbs through Moonah and Glenorchy up to Claremont, the eastern shore from Bellerive across to Howrah and Lindisfarne, and south to Kingston and Blackmans Bay. Wherever you are on this list, drop-off is a short run into the Hobart CBD.

Common questions

The things people ask before they call

Do I need to book, or can I just drop in?

Give us a call first. Reception is on the ground floor at WOTSO, 162 Macquarie Street, and a quick call means they are expecting you and your device gets logged in properly.

How much will my repair cost?

It depends on what is actually wrong, which is why we look before we quote. Call and describe what the machine is doing and we can usually give you a good idea on the phone. You always get a firm price before any work begins.

Can you recover data from a drive that will not work?

Often, yes. We do component-level recovery in-house in Tasmania, including donor head swaps for mechanical failures and NAND chip-off work for failed SSDs. If a drive is clicking or no longer detected, stop using it and call us before trying anything else.

My laptop is pretty old. Is it even worth repairing?

Sometimes it is not, and we will tell you. If a repair does not make financial sense we will say so and talk you through the alternatives rather than take the job anyway.

Do you work on Macs?

Yes. MacBooks and iMacs for repairs, upgrades and setup, alongside Windows laptops and desktops, gaming PCs, consoles, phones and tablets.

Will I lose my data during a repair?

We work to preserve your data wherever possible and will tell you upfront if a repair puts it at risk. Where practical we recommend having a backup before any work starts.

Is my personal information safe with you?

Yes. Access is limited to what the repair actually requires, devices are held in a private controlled workshop, and we are happy to sign an NDA before work begins if you would like one.

Which areas do you cover?

We look after customers right across greater Hobart, from the CBD and Sandy Bay through the northern suburbs to Claremont, across the eastern shore, and south to Kingston and Blackmans Bay. Drop-off is in the Hobart CBD.
